Over the years, we’ve realized something: there’s a lot less motivation for an out-and-back ride when there’s nothing exciting waiting at the turnaround point. Sure, biking is fun, and getting outside is great, but let’s be honest—the promise of a coffee stop (or something even sweeter) makes all the difference!
For us, a mid-ride coffee break is the perfect motivation to keep pedaling. There’s nothing quite like the anticipation of a perfectly brewed latte or cappuccino after a good stretch of riding. We have our favorite destinations in every city we bike in, choosing spots based on how far we want to go.
Why a Fun Stop Keeps You Going
1. It Turns a Ride into an Experience.
A simple out-and-back ride can sometimes feel like just another workout, but adding a fun destination transforms it into an adventure. Instead of just checking off miles, there’s something to look forward to, making the ride feel more like an experience than just exercise. Covering the same ground twice can be monotonous, making it harder to push for extra distance. When we had visitors with a toddler this summer, we used e-bikes, a Burley, and the promise of treats to motivate a 12-mile trail ride. It worked like a charm.
2. It Keeps Reluctant Riders Motivated
Let’s be real—convincing kids (or less enthusiastic riding buddies) to tack on a few extra miles isn’t always easy. But when there’s a reward involved? Suddenly, that extra distance doesn’t seem so bad! Just don’t mention how they might feel on the way home if they bury that triple scoop or mocha frappuccino. Speaking of indulgence, one of our favorite stops in Bentonville is Senor Shreddy’s food truck. We always go out of our way to stop there for a late lunch of loaded nachos or burritos to reward ourselves after a morning of mileage. The key? Sit long enough to digest before making the big push back to camp!
3. It Encourages Longer Rides Without Feeling Like a Chore
A ride with a fun pit stop doesn’t feel like a training session—it feels like a social outing. You end up covering longer distances without even thinking about it because the focus isn’t just on fitness—it’s on the experience. Stopping at a favorite location also means you might bump into friends and catch up. And when you refuel with a treat, you might even find yourself more energized for the return trip!
Sweeten the Ride—Literally!
At the end of the day, biking is about more than just exercise—it’s about enjoyment. Adding a treat stop turns a simple ride into something special. So next time you’re planning a ride, pick a destination with a little extra something—you’ll be surprised how much further you’re willing to go! 🚴♂️☕🍦
